The story so far

Shumbh sent the Devi an offer of marriage. She replied that only one who defeats her in battle could be her husband.

In the sixth adhyay, the messenger returned and told Shumbh what the Devi had said. Shumbh was filled with rage. He ordered his general Dhumralochan, 'Drag that woman here by her hair. If anyone protects her, defeat him too.' Dhumralochan reached the Himalaya with an army of sixty thousand asuras.

Dhumralochan said to the Devi, 'Come with me to my master Shumbh. If you do not come willingly, I will take you by force.' The Devi calmly replied, 'The great asura king has sent you. You are strong and you have an army. If you take me by force, what can I do?'

Hearing this, Dhumralochan rushed at her. But the Devi only made a , a single sound of 'Hum', and with that alone Dhumralochan was turned to ashes. When his army attacked her with arrows and weapons, the Devi's lion leapt in with a roar and scattered the whole asura army.

When Shumbh heard that Dhumralochan had been finished by a single sound and the army defeated, he bit his lip in anger. He called Chand and Mund and said, 'Take a great army and bring that Devi here. If you cannot, then defeat her and her lion in battle.'

A lesson for today

Real strength does not need to make noise. The Devi did not argue; she stayed calm, and when the moment came, a single sound was enough.
