The story so far

Dhumralochan was turned to ashes by a single sound from the Devi. Now Shumbh has sent Chand and Mund with a large army.

In the seventh adhyay, Chand and Mund reached the Himalaya with their fourfold army of elephants, horses, chariots and foot soldiers. There they saw the Devi seated on her lion on a high golden peak, smiling. The asuras moved forward with bows and swords to seize her.

Seeing this, the goddess Ambika grew very angry, and her face turned dark. From between her brows, from her forehead, a fierce goddess instantly appeared: this was Maa . She held a sword and a noose, wore a garland, and with a great roar she charged at the asura army.

Maa Kali tossed aside huge elephants and chariots and shattered the asuras' weapons. Seeing the army fall, Chand showered her with arrows and Mund hurled thousands of discs. But nothing worked against Kali. She ended both Chand and Mund.

Then Kali brought the heads of Chand and Mund to the goddess Chandika and said, 'I offer you these two great beasts. Now you yourself will end Shumbh and Nishumbh.' Pleased, the Devi said, 'Because you have brought Chand and Mund, you will be famous in the world as .'

यस्माच्चण्डं च मुण्डं च गृहीत्वा त्वमुपागता। चामुण्डेति ततो लोके ख्याता देवी भविष्यसि॥

Because you have come bringing Chand and Mund, O Devi, you will be known in the world as 'Chamunda'.

— Durga Saptashati, Adhyay 7

A lesson for today

The Mother has a gentle form and a fierce form. When those we love need protecting, love sometimes has to become strong and stern.
