Hanuman Gives Ram's Ring

Sita was in deep sorrow. Hanuman thought: if I appear suddenly, she will be frightened and may take me for one of Ravan's tricks. So, still sitting in the tree, he began softly singing Ram's story: Ayodhya, the exile, Sita's abduction, the friendship with Sugriv.

In the Ramcharitmanas, he then dropped Ram's ring down beside Sita. Seeing the ring with Ram's name on it, Sita was startled: how did this come here? Is my Lord safe? Tears began to flow from her eyes.

Then Hanuman came down in a small form and bowed. At first Sita doubted him. Hanuman described Ram and Lakshman, and spoke of Ram's grief in ways only someone close could know. Slowly Sita came to believe that he truly was Ram's messenger.

Hanuman said: Mother, sit on my back and I will carry you to the Lord right now. Sita refused. She said: Ram himself should come, defeat Ravan, and take me back with honour. That alone is worthy of his name. Leaving secretly is not right.

Hanuman assured her that Ram would soon come with the vanara army. Seeing his devotion and strength, Sita's heart overflowed. She gave him the blessing devotees still remember: may you never grow old, may you be immortal, and may you be a treasure-house of virtues.
