Janmashtami Puja Vidhi — Step by Step
- In the morning, bathe and take the resolve (sankalp) to observe the Janmashtami vrat.
- Dress the Laddu Gopal (infant Krishna) idol in beautiful clothes, place him on a swing, and decorate with flowers.
- During the day, chant 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' and read Krishna stories.
- From 11 PM, begin puja preparations — arrange a plate with panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, Gangajal), tulsi leaves, makhan-mishri, flowers, and incense.
- At midnight (12 AM), blow the conch and ring the bell — sing 'Jai Jai Yashoda Ke Lal'. Perform abhishek of the idol with panchamrit, announcing Krishna's birth.
- After abhishek, dress the idol in new clothes and offer makhan-mishri and sweets as bhog.
- Distribute prasad among family. The next day (Navami), perform brahmin bhojan or donate.
- Break the vrat on Dwadashi after sunrise.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Janmashtami and Gokulashtami?
Both are the same festival. It is called 'Janmashtami' in north India and 'Gokulashtami' in Maharashtra, the latter name connecting to Gokul of the Dwapar age.
When should I break the Janmashtami fast?
Break the Janmashtami fast after both Ashtami tithi and Rohini Nakshatra have ended — this is generally after sunrise on Navami or Dwadashi. Check your panchang for the exact time.
What is Dahi Handi?
Dahi Handi is celebrated the day after Janmashtami (Nand Mahotsav). The tradition of breaking a pot hung at a height is especially popular in Maharashtra and Gujarat. It re-enacts the childhood episode of young Krishna stealing butter.
